Huawei’s CFO had 3 Apple products at time of arrest

Huawei’s CFO Meng Wanzhou is apparently a fan of Apple and their diverse product line.

Meng was arrested by Canadian authorities at the request of the U.S. last December. The U.S. has alleged that Meng had dealings with a shell company that sold products to Iran, violating U.S. sanctions.

According to The Guardian, Meng is now suing the Canadian government, its border agency, and the national police. As part of her claim, Meng states that the Canadian Border Service Agency seized her property and compelled her to provide passwords to her devices before informing her she was under arrest.

Now, court documents have revealed what products Meng, who is also the daughter of Huawei’s founder, had in her possession at the time of her arrest – and it turns out she’s a fan of the competition.

Meng was arrested with the following Apple products in her possession:

  • An iPhone 7 Plus
  • A MacBook Air
  • An iPad Pro

Oops.

While the models of the MacBook Air and iPad Pro are unconfirmed as of yet, it’s surprising that the CFO of one of the worlds largest smartphone manufacturers owns a competitor’s products (it’s unclear to what extent she used them).

Meng did have one Huawei product in her possession at the time of her detainment – the luxe Porsche Design Mate 20 RS.

What makes the revelation even more interesting is that Huawei demoted two of their own employees for tweeting “Happy #2019” from an iPhone on New Year’s Eve. The demotion was also followed up with a $700 deduction in their monthly paychecks, with Huawei’s digital marketing director losing pay for a whole year.

It is highly unlikely that the daughter of the founder will face such severe punishment (if she avoids extradition or is found not guilty and is able to return to China), but it does raise questions about Huawei’s faith in their own products and their privacy.
